Asclepias incarnata

Swamp Milkweed

Host plant for Monarch butterflies. Lovely flower heads of pink attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The vanilla scented flowers are great for cutting. Sear stems with a flame to seal in the milk. Cutting also encourages continued bloom. Large seed pods develop in the fall that can be used in dry arrangements. Removal of these from the plant will keep them from self-seeding. Milkweeds are very slow to emerge in the spring.
