This host plant for Monarch butterflies is a native to Western North America. It has fuzzy purplish-rose flowers in 3 inch umbels and has gray-green fuzzy leaves up to 8 inches long. Does well in poor, gravelly soil as well as in regular garden soil. It is drought resistant, but best with regular watering. Large seed pods develop in the fall that can be used in dry arrangements. Removal of these from the plant will keep them from re-seeding. Slow to emerge in the spring.
Blooms: Late Spring to Mid Summer
