Western Dog Violet is native to much of the western and northern parts of the US. You'll find it in meadows, open woods, and open slopes from sea level to timberline. It is an important host plant for several Pacific Northwest butterflies, including the Oregon Silverspot butterfly which is listed as a threatened species under the United States Endangered Species Act, the Great Spangled Fritillary, Hydaspe Fritillary, and Callippe Fritillary. In the garden, it grows well in lightly shaded areas (or sunny areas with afternoon shade,) with moist, humusy soil. It spreads by runners and also through self seeding.
